World Rapid and Blitz 2026 goes to Istanbul; venue and rules still to come
Published · By TG, the site operator
FIDE has named Istanbul, Türkiye, as the host of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2026. The event will decide four world titles: the Open and the women's rapid, and the Open and the women's blitz. FIDE published the announcement on 29 October 2026.
When it is, and what is still open
Chess.com, reporting the announcement, gives the playing dates as 26 to 30 December 2026. FIDE's own text describes the championships as traditionally held in the final week of the year, running from 25 December for arrivals to 30 December. Both place the event in the same final week, but neither gives a day-by-day schedule. The venue, the tournament regulations and the registration details are all still to be announced, and FIDE says they will follow shortly.
The defending champions
The announcement names the defending champions: Magnus Carlsen in the Open rapid and blitz, Aleksandra Goryachkina in the women's rapid, and Bibisara Assaubayeva in the women's blitz. FIDE calls Carlsen the world's number one rated player. Freedom Holding Corp., FIDE's strategic partner since 2023, is the title sponsor.
Rapid and blitz, in plain terms
Rapid games give each player more thinking time than blitz, so there is room to work out a critical line before moving. In blitz the clock is often the deciding factor, and a fixed routine helps: check the king, then every capture and threat, then choose a plan. The same routine is worth practising in slower games, because it is the first thing many players drop when the clock runs down.
What this site can and cannot do
chessplayonline.com has no clock. AI games have no time limit, and an online game closes only if ten minutes pass with the position unchanged, as the rules guide explains. The site does not rate players, so it cannot run a rapid or blitz event or show a result that counts for a title. What it can offer is a place to practise the routine above without pressure.
A practice plan for the next few weeks
- Set a phone or kitchen timer for a think time you choose, and play three games on Normal while keeping to it.
- Before each move, say the routine aloud: the king, the captures and threats, then the plan.
- Afterwards, note the move where the time ran out and whether you spent it on calculation or on hesitation.
What to watch
- The official venue, regulations and registration, which FIDE has not yet published.
- The day-by-day schedule, once the regulations give the playing days.
- Whether the three defending champions enter; the announcement names them but does not confirm entries.
